Why Hire a 444A Certified Arborist (Not Just Anyone With a Chainsaw)

When a tree needs work, it can be tempting to hire whoever is cheapest. But tree work is one of the most dangerous trades there is, and bad work can harm, or even kill, a tree that might have lived for decades. Here's why certification matters, and what Ontario's 444A designation actually means.

What is a 444A Certified Arborist?

In Ontario, Arborist (444A) is a skilled trade regulated by Skilled Trades Ontario. To earn it, an arborist must complete a registered apprenticeship of roughly 6,120 hours of combined on-the-job and in-school training, then pass a provincial certification exam.

In other words, 444A is government-regulated, tested proof of competence, covering tree biology, pruning standards, rigging, climbing, and the safe use of equipment. It's a stronger local trust signal than a voluntary membership, because the province sets and verifies the standard.

Why it matters for your trees

  • Proper pruning cuts. Bad cuts (like "topping") create weak regrowth, decay and long-term hazards. A certified arborist prunes to recognized standards.
  • Accurate diagnosis. Many tree problems look alike. Correct diagnosis means the right treatment, and sometimes saving a tree you thought was lost.
  • Long-term value. Healthy, well-structured trees add beauty and property value for decades.

Why it matters for your safety and wallet

  • Insurance & WSIB. A reputable company is fully insured and WSIB covered, so you're not liable if something goes wrong.
  • The right equipment and technique. Proper rigging and climbing prevents damage to your home, fences and landscaping.

The bottom line
