A mature tree is a valuable asset, it adds shade, beauty and even value to your property. But when a tree becomes unhealthy or unstable, it can quickly turn into a serious hazard. Here are five signs it may be time to call a certified arborist for a removal assessment.
1. Large dead branches or a dead crown
A few dead twigs are normal. Large dead limbs, or a canopy that fails to leaf out in spring, often signal a tree in decline. Dead branches can fall without warning.
2. Cracks in the trunk or major limbs
Vertical cracks, seams, or splits where large limbs meet the trunk are a structural red flag. They can indicate the tree is failing from the inside.
3. Fungus, cavities or rot at the base
Mushrooms growing at the base, soft or hollow-sounding wood, and open cavities all point to internal decay that weakens the tree’s support.
4. A sudden lean
Trees that have always leaned slightly may be fine. A new lean, especially after a storm, combined with heaving soil or exposed roots on one side is a sign the tree may be uprooting.
5. Roots damaging structures
Roots lifting your driveway, walkway or foundation can be a costly problem, and sometimes removal is the right long-term solution.
When in doubt, get it assessed
Many trees can be saved with pruning, cabling or treatment, removal isn’t always the answer. The safest move is to have a 444A Certified Arborist assess the tree before it becomes an emergency.
